Homemade Foot Stool

round butcher block foot rest

Happy Monday everyone,

I hope you had a beautiful weekend

I’m glad to say hubby and I took time to work on small projects around the house. Nate is soaking up every minute of sunshine that he can. Playing in the yard is one of his first requests every morning and I have already gotten a nice tan because of this. I am once again behind in my e-mails but I had to take advantage of the great weather we are having around here and make my little man happy. Our summers don’t last long enough.

Today, I would like to share with you this small project we did for me: a foot stool. It was supposed to be mine but I should’ve know better, Nate has already claimed it for himself.

He loves it and is using it as a stool/table in our living room, I don’t mind , I am glad it makes him happy.

these are the items I used for this project:

  • -Diego kids chair (only the legs)
  • -lazy suzan from IKEA (gift from my mother-in-law)
  • -white acrylic paint
  • -pillow (you can use any pillow you have around the house)
  • -elastic band

this is the Diego kid chair I used, he has two of them and last summer I painted them with chalkboard paint. He didn’t use them anymore, so I was going to paint them in a different color and left them in a corner of his bedroom untouched until one day while watching TV, I needed something to put my legs up while reading a magazine. In order to relax, for those who know me, I turned this simple need to put my feet up into a DIY project:

this is the lazy suzan I used, as you can see from the picture below, Nate had already started coloring on it:

we only used the legs of the chair:

I needed hubby’s help again, he had to unscrew and pry off the pieces of wood holding the legs:

hubby also helped me by removing the mechanisms of the lazy suzan:

maybe, I shouldn’t write “WE” worked on this project,

maybe I should write:  “HUBBY, did most of the work despite his reluctance to get off the couch on his day off to help me with this”, oh well, he knew what he was getting into when he decided to stay with me

I then asked him to sand the legs because I wanted to paint them in a different color:

hubby then screwed the legs into the bottom of the lazy suzan:

at this moment, I was thinking of painting the legs in white:

then I thought of maybe staining them in a rich dark chocolate so that the white color of the top would pop against the dark wood, but I decided against it and left it as is:

I almost forgot to mention this step, after painting the top in white (I forgot to take a picture of this step), I decided to lightly sand the top to once again get the distressed look that I am currently in love with:

after achieving the look I was going for hubby said: “babe, wouldn’t it more comfortable if you would add a cushion to your foot stool?”

I said “hmmm, yeah that would be nice but we don’t have one

then he said ” why don’t you just use a pillow” , so that’s what we did: we added a pillow and simply attached it to the foot stool with a white elastic band:

I didn’t even have time to take my first picture of the finished product in my living room when Nate hijacked it. See, what I mean:

while watching TV and me trying to get a decent picture of the foot stool, he removed the pillow to use it as a little table for himself and got comfortable:

I am glad to say that days after these pictures were taken, I had the chance to finally put my feet up. What I love about this foot stool is that it is versatile, it doesn’t take up too much space in our tiny living room and you don’t even notice it because it blends very well with our existing furniture. I am also happy to report that Nate has given me permission to use it from time to time as a step to reach plates and cereal from higher shelves in our kitchen.

The adorable little dog you see in the picture below is my little Angel. Once again, I wasn’t able to take good pictures without one of my dogs or Nate putting themselves in front of the camera posing for a picture. If I didn’t know any better, I would think that they are using my blog to launch their modeling career.  I am not kidding when I say I took at least 50 pictures in our living room to get usable shots to share with you:for kids and toddlers and for puppies lazy suzan transformed into a foot rest with white pillow and white ottoman and brown sofa

Hope everyone has a beautiful week and don’t forget to put your feet up!

Thanks again for stopping by!

Aren’t we lucky to have husbands who go along with our crazy whims? Last year I had hubby collecting dead tree branches to spray paint. He doesn’t even seem surprised bu my requestes anymore!

I love your idea of frankensteining your furniture to make an awesome footstool! It’s the perfect height to double as a steps tool and a little table. I LOVE your living room:)

I am really impressed with your husband’s sanding job! He is hired for my next project (I’m sure he would be really happy to hear that)! My husband wasn’t to keen to help me with a project I was doing this weekend. But like you said, I think our husbands knew what they were getting into when they married us!

& yes, I will let him know what you said about his sanding job, he will be proud of himself 🙂
