Garage sale finds

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all having a great week, we have been busy around the house and hubby has been busy cleaning our yard. I’m a bit nervous because this afternoon I have a dentist appointment and I always get scared going to the dentist. Wish me luck.

I’ve been meaning to post about the garage sale finds since last weekend but I had not been able to. Glad I took some time today to write all about it. Last Saturday morning after breakfast my mom called me to let me know about a garage sale that was going on just a street away from our house and about a solid wood dining set. We left the house right away to check it out.

Remember, I told you we were looking into changing our white dining table? Well, this one is in a better condition than our old one. The table and chairs are outdated but when I looked at them I knew we could repurpose them:

We removed the old, ugly fabric from the chairs and we are planning on sanding them very soon and spray paint them in white. After staring at them for a while, I’m not too sure I will keep them. I am thinking of pairing the dining table with modern chairs instead. I got these for almost nothing, so I don’t feel bad breaking up the set. Until I find the dining table of my dreams, this one will do:

While walking back home and happy with our purchase, we happened across another garage sale at the corner of our street and noticed a chair.  We asked how much where they asking for and they told us “it’s not for sale“, they were using it for sitting during the garage sale. After some discussion though, the couple sold it to me for $5:

can you see from this picture how bad the chair looked? Awful. Right? There was glue on top of the chair. I knew we could get rid of it just by sanding it. This is a solid oak chair. There is a stamp underneath the chair “Henderson, St-Lambert, Quebec”. I googled this and found out it was a furniture company and might this chair might have been produced back in the 70’s. I believe it’s an old office chair but there was not much information on the web about this:

Hubby spent hours outside sanding the chair, it turned out great. I haven’t decided yet what do with it. Should I spray paint it in white? Should I keep it in the dining room area? I don’t know yet, but as soon as I do something I will let you know about it. What would you do with it? Please, I need some ideas

Remember, I told you I was going to give you an update on the state of my living room? Here is a tiny sneak peek. I wanted to take better pictures but unfortunately Nate had made a mess and I wanted to take a picture before it would get dark outside. I used black frames to create a small gallery wall and I’m loving this look. It’s not complete yet and I’m hoping on showing you better pictures later on. I chose to decorate my living room with the following colors: white, blue and black but I haven’t been able to complete this space yet.

Below, is a picture from an IKEA living room that inspired me, the colors they chose are very similar to the ones I decided to decorate with; white, blue and black. They also used grey for the sofas, which I really love and I’m now considering adding grey to our living room as well. What do you think about it? I really want a black and white rug, I just need to convince hubby about this!

I hope you will all have a great week and

thanks again for stopping by!

Ingrid

Good luck with the dentist, I hate going, too. But I remind myself to be grateful for modern medicine with all the anaesthetics!!!

I love the look of timber so I suggest a light stain. Then I would add a crochet “pinwheel” cushion. Superb!!!

I love the dining room set! It looks like hard rock maple to me and whoever put that hideous material on the seats was NOT doing it a good service. Take that stuff off and sand down one of the chairs – I bet the wood looks exactly like the killer Captain’s Chair you got at the other sale! Since the cost isn’t entering into it if you have the time before it starts dumping snow on you up there – you could paint the table and then take Krylon Mirror spray paint or the Hammered aluminum spray paint and paint the chair to give them a modern look. Not EXACTLY sure how it would look but it would give a modern look to vintage chairs. Just an idea!

🙂 thanks Kelli, I took the ugly fabric out and the wood is in perfect condition! now I just need to think of the color of the chairs 🙂 something different but don’t know if I will keep them in here! I am looking at more modern chairs but I will have to wait and see! As for the sanding I will try to do this as soon as possible just before the weather changes around here 😉

If your dining room is open to the living room (& I think it is…) you could pull out one of your colors from in there to help transition the areas. I also remember a funky rug you showed us from Ikea…if you have anything with a bold print in the living room you could repeat it on the chair…or maybe do the solid white or gray but bring in another color with a little pillow. Whatever you decide, I know it will be pretty!

🙂 Yes, it is Amy! the dining room is open to the living room and you have a very good idea 🙂 thank you very much! I’m thinking that if I get other chairs for the dining room I could paint them in a dark blue or white to pull out one of the colors from the living room (make them modern) 🙂 I am considering a lot of ideas now! thanks again Amy!

    Love your finds!!
I too think that the table would work better with modern chairs. Those four chairs could be used in other places in the house. I have those exact chairs, two of them, and I did a pink ombre on one and some free hand pattern on the other, I use them in the daughters’ bedroom, at the desk. Check them out on my blog, girls’ bedroom.

Thank you very much Ozana 🙂 I love the idea of painting them in different colors (I will have to go and see how your pink one turned out for your daughter’s bedroom) 🙂 I will start looking for the chairs I really want! 🙂

Knowing the great projects you have completed previously, I am sure your chairs will look just as awesome. What great finds! I love going on the hunt for what things can be repurposed too. It is such a great way to decorate on a budget and take care of the world at the same time. My problem is that I always have good intentions but don’t always get the project done. Looking forward to seeing what you end up doing with your $%.00 chair. Take Care, Thea

🙂 that’s true for me too Thea, sometimes I want to start a project and I don’t finish it! (I still have 2 old nightstands that need sanding and painting) 🙂
I can’t wait to decide what will I do with these chairs (color) and what type of new chairs I can bring in to break the set (I started looking for them!)
Thanks Thea for your support I hope I will be able to post about it soon! 🙂

Great finds Ingrid! I think the dinning room set as well as the chair would look great sanded and painted white. I love the blue color on your living room wall and the frames look spectacular! I’m in the process of moving (packing up the house). When I move into my next house I think I’m going to ask you for decorating tips. You’re really good at interior design it seems. I can’t wait to see the finished furniture. 😀

Oh! thank you very much Vashti! 🙂 Yes, I think I will be painting the chairs (but I might use them in other rooms) & for the table I’m thinking white or natural (not sure yet!) 🙂 the living room, I took pictures today and hope to post about it very soon, hope you will like as much as I do (even if I still have new accessories to buy) 🙂 thanks again Vashti! 🙂

Hope the dentist gave you only good news… I am loving grey these days and I could see why that Ikea living room is your inspiration. Love those black frames you’ve added. I always mean to add frames up on my walls but I never get around to it. Perhaps you could come over for a visit??? How about black for that chair? Can’t wait to see what you end up doing! Have a great weekend Ingrid!

Thank you very much Lidia, yes, I’m loving grey too but I lately I didn’t find what I wanted (I have 2 grey chairs but I left them in our basement for now). I’m still looking for great accessories 🙂 & I used to have a wall gallery before our renovation but never put one back (I had to ask hubby for help on this one) 🙂 I don’t know yet what color should I go with the chair, I love the idea of black or a really bright color! (I haven’t decided yet!) 🙂 Wish you a great weekend to you too Lidia! 🙂

That is a gorgeous new chair- great find. Hmm…. if it is the only chair like that you could always keep it as an accent chair and paint it in a fresh colour. Sanding is such tedious work- nice your husband did that! I love the black and white rug idea too!!

🙂 thank you Krista & oh! I am thankful that hubby sand it for me because I know how much work it is! It took him a while to get these results but now I really love it and can’t wait to decide the color of paint I will choose! 🙂 & yes because I only have one of these , it will be an accent chair that I might keep here in our dining area! 🙂
