Dining Room Makeover Ideas and ORC week 1

dining room makeover ideas

Hello everyone,

have you heard about the ORC?

the ORC is the One Room Challenge created by the lovely Linda from the Calling it Home blog. I fell in love with Linda’s blog earlier this year when she transformed her entrance beautifully.

The challenge is to transform 1 room in 6 weeks from start to finish. We will be able to see how Linda along with 19 other bloggers transform a room and that’s not all, she was kind enough to invite us all to participate by linking up our rooms every Wednesday for the next 6 weeks.

It starts today Wednesday, Oct 2nd and you can read all the details on Linda’s blog:

ORClinkingparticipantCIH

From the first picture, you have already figured out what room I decided to work on; my dining area.

I love my DIY pantry in this space and our big white table but I need a change. I also want to create a better visual flow between the living room and dining room. Having the same flooring in both spaces is great but the styles of the rooms don’t match.

As you may already know, the walls in our living room are blue-grey and the walls in our dining room are grey, so when it came time to choose the accent colors that would connect these two distinct spaces it was a no-brainer. Now, let me show you what I’m talking about:

a couple of days ago, when I was browsing on Pinterest for some inspiration I found this beautiful dark dining room and decided that black, white and gold are the colors I want to work with in this space. I used these colors for my living room, I love them very much and I believe they will look great with the grey walls:

I love how cozy this space feels with dark walls, a banquette and a round table. I won’t be painting our space with dark walls but I will try to achieve a similar look with black accents.

Having a smaller round table would be lovely in our space. We already have a black one that belonged to my parents and I’m considering making it our new dining table. Now here is another picture from Pinterest that caught my attention because it’s similar to my parents table and I like how it creates a cozy nook. I’m all about creating cozy spaces lately, I think it’s because Fall is here:

Now what about this picture for inspiration, isn’t it beautiful? black and gold:

black round table and black sideboard in dining room

I might be keeping my old brown dresser in this space because it holds a lot of our ‘tupperware’ and other kitchen items or I’m might just ask hubby to move it upstairs. Should I paint it? I don’t know, I have 6 more weeks to decide.

I’m also loving the idea of having a nice narrow table and use it as a sideboard like this one:

black table as sideboard in dining room

And, from this picture I love the white sideboard, black lampshades and gold accessories:

This is how our dining area looks today and I know that my space won’t turn out as good as the spaces in those pictures because I don’t have the budget for it. Also, for this challenge, I will try my best not to spend money, instead I will try to update this room with items that I already have around the house. Cans of spray paint will be my best friends for the next 6 weeks to come, wish me luck:

these are the items I want to update or remove from our space:

  • light fixture: don’t like it, we bought it when we moved in because we needed one and every time I look for a new one it’s too expensive or too big for our space.
  • fabric board: the board it’s functional but too much color going on for this room. I will bring it up to my craft room.
  • wood sign: I love it but it doesn’t go with the style I want to create in this space.
  • table: we love it but I’m looking for something smaller and round because Nate loves to run around and hurts himself every day with the corners of the table.
  • pantry: I LOVE it, I might keep it, I’m not sure yet.
  • chairs: might spray paint them or I will switch them. don’t know yet.

The next challenge will be to pace myself to complete this project in 6 weeks, knowing me I will want to have this room ready by next week. I can see hubby nodding his head in agreement when he will read this post later today.

See you next Wednesday with a new update of this room! And, don’t forget to go and see what Linda and the others are up to!

(if her ORC challenge is not up yet, you might want to try it back later today)

hope you are inspired now to update one of your rooms, I’d love to see you in the ORC page. If you are already participating, I want to visit your plan, just leave me a comment and I will make sure to stop by!

Thanks again for stopping by!

Ingrid

The ORC is a great idea, wish I could join in, it would be just the thing to get me going with my home space – which is badly in need of change and doing-up. Enjoy :-)

This is all very exciting – I will enjoy watching it………….so, the light fixture……….can you turn it upside down and run the wires through the other way, spray paint it a more neutral color and maybe even spray paint the bell glass light domes…………and of course buying another glass light for what was the top but now is the bottom? Just my thoughts………..do you have Vocational Tech schools there in Canada? I think if memory serves – what we call college is actually what you consider vo-tech. Trade school? If you can find one near you that has an electrician program I bet you could talk to them about what you want to do and they will take it on as a project, that way it will only cost you for the wiring…………just a thought……….:)

thanks again Kelli for the idea, I appreciate it! :-)

I know that dining table gold foot is beautiful, I want that but convincing hubby to do something similar won’t be easy, he will say it’s too girly but that’s okay, I will try my best to convince him ;-)

Looks like you have some good inspiration and great materials to work with. That’s great that you have another table that fits your desired look. Buying furniture can be such a drag. Trying to find just the right piece, but in your budget. I am digging the black and gold theme. I say, keep the pantry. It looks so functional! Perhaps you can redecorate it, if it isn’t quite fitting any more. Good luck on your challenge! :D

thank you so much Bethany, you know I love the pantry but I think I will not have it anymore (But before I remove it, I need to know where am I going to store everything) :-) & yes, I think I might change the table (will be better for my son and more cozy too) One day, when Nate will be older and if I have the budget for it, I want a nice big table over here but for now, a small old one will have to do! :-) I don’t want to spend money on this project, I am trying to work with items I already have :-) (hope I can make this happen) ha!ha! :-) thanks Bethany for visiting too! :-)

I’ll keep checking on your Dining Room progress – definitely sounds more fun than mine!
