Dining Room Makeover and ORC challenge week 5

white and black light for the dining room

Hi everyone,

it’s now week 5 of the ORC challenge and believe it or not I still have yet to decide on so many things.

I’m terrible at this, every week I keep changing my mind about the décor of this space and about which pieces of furniture I want to keep or toss aside. Do you remember the ‘inspiration‘ pictures I posted weeks ago? What happened with those you may ask. Well, I think it’s the white sectional that blindsided me.

I would also love to thank every single one of you who gave me their feed back and suggestions, I tried a few but I still kept moving things around.

With only one week left, I feel as if I need 6 more weeks to finish this space. I would’ve love getting new curtains and maybe a new piece of art to complete the room but those are luxuries I can’t afford right now.

Now, please let me show you a gift my mom gave us to help with this challenge: a black and white light fixture

white and black light for the dining room makeover

this light fixture is perfect for all DIY’ers and decorators, it’s inexpensive and it’s basically plastic cut outs that interlock with each other which allows you to make the lamp as big or as small as you want with any patterns or colors that you choose. I prefer it to the chandelier that I spray painted in gold because it gives the room a modern look, which is what this space needed to improve the flow between the living room and dining room.

I also love how big it is and that we can easily move it around if needed. You don’t need to play with any wiring to install it. You may also notice in the next pictures that we had to cover the ‘ceiling box’ where the previous chandelier was installed with white duct tape. It’s a temporary solution, don’t know when hubby will work on it. The new big black and white light fixture was very easy to install to the ceiling, we just used a staple gun to keep it in place:

By the way, you might have also noticed that the small black round table is no longer here nor is the white sectional. What happened? I don’t know.

I decided to bring the white table back. I know, I know, hubby was not to happy about it but the black table felt to small for this space. It was perfect for just the 3 of us but the room felt empty. If I would’ve had nice pieces of art or a settee, I think I would’ve kept it but for now the white table is back. Hubby is worried that I will keep changing my mind every week about this:

Remember the lamps (below) I brought from our basement to this space? Based on your feedback, they weren’t tall enough so they went back downstairs and got the ones that I had in my bedroom into the dining room. It feels as if I’m playing the ‘musical chairs’ with my lamps:

white and black light for the dining room

sorry friends, this is the only good picture (below) I had of one of the black lamps:

white and black light for the dining room

didn’t I tell you I was terrible at this?

now, I need to hurry up and shop my house for accessories that I can add in here and I hope I will be able to show you the complete room next week

don’t forget to dress up, tomorrow is Halloween and hope to see many of you in your costumes and cute pictures of your kids too

Have a Safe and Happy Halloween everyone!

(only 1 more night left for the big day)

In case you missed it, and you would like to read about it: week 1, week 3, week 4 of the ORC challenge

& don’t forget to check out what the others are doing!

Thanks again for stopping by!

Ingrid you might think you’re terrible with this project, but you’re terrific because of your patience and that’s what we all need. I’m believing for your win for this project. The lamp is quite unique and I’m waiting for the completion. What a beautiful project! You will definitely remember this project due to your determination. Blessings, Mtetar

I can’t decide if I like the light fixture or it reminds me of a pinata. Either way, it’s definitely cool.
Good luck making your decisions. I’m afraid I am not the one to give advice. I do think you do a great job and will figure it out and it will look awsome. Enjoy the process.

LOVE the black and white shade. Also, that big plant on your windowsill really catches the light beautifully and softens up the harder angles in the room. Looks stunning. Halloween, dress up? Nah, I don’t need a costume, thanks, will just take a pic of myself as I wake up.

Ingrid, you are so funny. I love this table and it was the first thing I noticed. Those lamps do look better, but you already know that. I love that you mom gave you a light fixture. How fun, I wonder what this space will look like next week :)

    • now at home mom says:

:-) thank you so much Linda!
I had to change the table, I think it fits better in this space, the other one felt too small in here.
wish I had a better picture of those lamps too but you will be able to see them next week, oh, oh, only days left !!!
yes, my mom knew I wanted to change that light for a while now and she knew I would like this one very much because I can change it when I want :-) see you next week!

I love seeing your process Ingrid! And I love it because it seems so close to what I would do. Bring ‘x’ into space. Scratch head. Try ‘y’. Take ‘x’ out. Scratch head. Remove ‘y’ and bring in ‘z’. Then bring ‘x’ back. Scratch head. Then light match and set fire to room…. oh wait. NO, don’t do that! lol. Seriously though, I am loving the new light fixture!!

I’ve loved following along in your process of making over this dining room! It just goes to show how much thought, love, and care you put into dressing up each space. Also, that light fixture is too cool! It reminds me of something out of Cirque du Soleil, which is perfect for a Canadian! Great job, Ingrid.

:-) sure Rhema, please tell me is it in wood your wooden tv stand if it’s not you can just buy a primer (spray in white) & then spray paint it in white (at least 2 coats)
