Who has a bonus room in their house? We didn’t, but thanks to some furniture rearrangement; now we do! Yay!
But hold on, it’s not ready yet.
OK let me explain, last November; lovely lady from pillowsalamode , wrote a post about her “Crafty Corner”, I truly loved her post and loved the idea of having a “crafty corner” for myself. After spending many evenings talking about this to my hubby, I convinced him. There is one condition, there is an imposed budget of ONLY $25.00, no extra money will be spent on new furniture or new accessories. Talk about ruining my excitement, not only this project is looking difficult to realize with a 19 month old running around me 24/7 but it will also be challenging due to the lack of budget. That’s OK, I am resourceful and I love a challenge. I will be posting a list of the purchases when I will buy them, wish me luck
I am excited, I can’t wait to have a dedicated room for all our DIY and craft projects in our house. Every time I’m inspired to start a new project, it ends up in our dining room table and our son grabs anything that is at his reach. Hopefully, this will no longer be the case.
So, the room we will be using is the 3rd and smallest bedroom of the house, it used to be our son’s playroom, where all his toys were kept. Lately, we haven’t used this room too often because we spend most of our days in the main floor and when he wants to play with his big cars we bring him to the basement.
This is what we have done so far:
- We started by moving things out of the bedroom and placed toys and games where they belong; in the baby’s room and in the basement.
- We are not sure of keeping or removing an IKEA Billy black library that is already in the room. We might keep it because it will provide us with much needed storage but I haven’t decided yet because we are working with an odd shaped room.
- We moved a desk and a chair to the room.
The desk, we are using is from IKEA, last summer I painted it in white and used it as a nightstand for our bedroom, you can see the project here
After giving it much thought, we finally decided to use it in our new “craft/office” room.
Below, is a picture of the IKEA Leksvik desk and how it used to look before we painted

This IKEA Hemnes dressing table is in our bedroom and I use it as a vanity, but let’s get real, since I stopped working, I don’t wear makeup or perfume every morning, so I don’t need it in our bedroom anymore. I hope it will make a perfect addition to the craft/office room. Of course, I won’t be keeping the mirror as seen in the picture, I will attach the mirror to another dresser.
Below, is a picture from the IKEA website of the 3rd desk I will be using in the room:

a Besta Burs desk, in high gloss white
I love this desk, it’s looks great, it’s glossy and I am thinking of using it as a sewing machine table. I sew? yes, I do, a bit, not much, I am not good at it and almost every project I start, I don’t finish or looks awful. My mom gave me her old sewing machine, so now I will have a space to display it. Do you remember this desk? it was in one of my fist posts http://nowathomemom.com/the-before-and-after-of-my-small-home-office/ , we are bringing this desk from our basement to the craft/office room
Have you noticed our furniture is all from IKEA?
We love IKEA, if you have been following my blog for a while you may already know this and you won’t be surprised if most of my accessories will be from IKEA too, they are inexpensive, functional and stylish
& no, IKEA doesn’t pay me to write about their products, they don’t even know about my post
I just love their products and have their furniture around our house
I’ve been looking for a picture of how the playroom used to look, but I can’t find any, I will continue looking and once the project is complete, I would love to show you a before and after picture and give you a small tour
You can take a glance at the playroom in one of the pictures from this project.
I hope this project won’t take too long and I already have ideas of a couple of DIY projects I want to do. Hope you will stick around!
By the way, I created a “craft rooms inspiration” board on Pinterest, I’m sure I will get all the inspiration I need from there.
Thanks again for stopping by!

Nice piece of work says:
I’m following you on Pinterest now:-) Those craft rooms are pretty incredible, each one of them is smarter and tidier than my entire flat.
I have three bedrooms, so the third (littlest one) is for the computers, my sewing machine, and other craft stuff. The built-in cupboards are FULL of wool and old clothes, and the rest is just a horrible mess of materials for – mosaic, painting, scrapbooking, beading, ceramic painting, sewing, embroidery, etc. I’ve managed to make two pinboards recently, and put a couple of other things up on the walls to try and be more organised, but clearly a hugely concerted effort is required. It has gotten so bad that I took photos of it the other day to try and shock myself into action. Sigh.
Good luck with your space. I have a feeling you’re going to be very chuffed with it when it’s done. Everyone needs their own space, whatever the size.

Thank you very much for the follow, I just checked yours too and followed. I also took a look at your blog, I really like it, I will be reading your posts
Wow! 2 boards already, I need to start on my room now I guess. Now that I have posted, I have no choice but to continue
I would love to see the pictures you took; I wonder how it looks like

Great start! I can’t wait to see more pictures.
now at home mom says:

All excited for you!! And go girl! You are going to pull it out with 25$ i’m sure! I’m glad i have my own sewing room even if it’s only 8′x8′ it’s MY room! Can’t wait to see it all finished and nice looking. Love ikea furniture even though i hate going to the store and the desk is so better looking in white! I’m a sucker for white furniture
hugs!
now at home mom says:
Thank you very much! I know , I have some shopping to do with only $25 !!! we will see how it turns out! Sometimes having our space even if it’s small is the best
it’s ours + I’m sure you need it even more than I do when you sew! btw, same here, I love white furniture, it’s the best, it always look great in any space!
Cul de Sac says:
And reflecting light, so your room seems bigger! Yay for white furniture!
now at home mom says:
yes, true but it has an odd shape to it, too many angles, in our house we don’t have any square rooms, except for the kitchen
weird , u should see our living room, so many angles, it’s difficult placing any furniture
(we have a narrow town house!)
little poppits says:
I would so love to have a craft room. I have a space in my bedroom but in truth I have crafty stuff everywhere in the house! x cant wait to see your finished pictures. x
now at home mom says:
Thank you! I’m excited too, I just hope it will turn out OK!
but I’m like you, I have lots of things around the house (not kidding)!! My dining room looks like a craft room itself sometimes

I have IKEA furniture in my craft room too. I have had it for about twenty years and it has been used is so many different ways. The baby change table is now the computer desk! I am curious to see what you do with a $25.00 budget. ~Thea
now at home mom says:
LOL! OMG! I just put the changing table of my son in the craft room next to the small window, I am hoping to use it as a small island to store craft tools! wow 20 years, I love IKEA furniture, I guess it works in most spaces

I need to figure out a way to fit my office in my little bitty 2 bedroom apartment. I was thinking that since my daughter sleeps with me, I could use a little corner of her room? But then I feel bad because that is her room! Waah, what to do? Great post. Thank you for sharing!
now at home mom says:
Thank you very much for the nice compliment, and why not have a small corner in her room, maybe one day you will be able to transform that small space into her crafty corner
jgann22 says:
That is a great way to think of it! I don’t have to think of it negative after all.
